I really like Antonio and feel he has been great for us but it does feel like the Reid contract all over again
I mean I will be very disappointed if he is still first choice in a year or 2

Shit business. Would have given him 2 years max. Should be concentrating more on a replacement.
Still he can play at RB when he's 33.

I remember him doing his hammy while sprinting to unsuccessfully keep in a sliced clearance from Randolph. A proper Cirque de Pellegrini moment. He's definitely been taught to measure his effort and only go full pelt when it could create a direct threat on goal. Risk management that's paying off.

I actually don't think he runs himself into the ground any more.
Which probably explains him not getting injured all the time and also explains why maybe he isn't as fit as he once was.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing but seems to be the way they're managing him.
Just a shame he has to stay on for 90 minutes most games as a replacement would be great and help him more.

Maybe that’s because he runs himself into the ground every time he plays?

You can build a squad on the likes of Antonio, his attitude, physical presence etc. He’s one of our benchmark players to be a handful/threat up front and whoever comes in will have to be decent to either cover or replace his loss of form.
He doesn’t want to be carried, he just gets on with playing his game…..

Least injury prone he's been definitely.
Fittest he's been, nah he looks fucked every game..

Fittest he has been for us since we got him. Let's hope it stays that way.
Hopefully can do a Vardy and keep his current form.

Great news.
No need for us to sign another striker for atleast four years.

My recollection is that when he signed his current contract it was reported as £70k pw. He does seem better prepared to avoid injury TOUCH WOOD and not looking either muscle bound (or FAT) as he was when regularly breaking down. Still need a back up to give him a break at some point.
My only insistence with the new contract would have been international retirement once World Cup qualification was gone.
Has been a definite turnaround from 2 or 3 years ago when many were very keen on accepting £10m or thereabouts from Crystal Palace for him.

I think people are being unrealistic. Antonio would only agree with a shorter contract if it was for more money per week.
So we’d be paying him more money per week for a shorter contract. What would we have gained exactly?
Antonio seems to get better as he gets older. This season, at 31, his injuries are down and he’s one of the top scorers in the Premier League. In three years time he might still be a useful squad player and dressing room leader.
I’m happy to tie him down rather than have him go to a smaller club for the extra game time.

I wonder what some people on here actually want sometimes.
We’ve just extended the contract of someone who has been excellent for us in the main, especially since going up front, and he fully deserves what he’s getting. It’s his last big contract so naturally he wants it to be decent money and for a decent duration.
It’s nothing but good news but I get the feeling that the ‘I told you so’ brigade will be waiting for him to get a big injury and then tell us how they were right.
It doesn’t mean that Bowen is definitely going and it doesn’t mean that we’re not going to sign another striker. It means that Antonio is staying with us. Simple as that.

Is 100k per week in the football World a massive sum of money anymore. When you think of the amoints we have paid in the past.. 140k chicharito, Yarmolenko, upwards of 100k etc The new deal for Antonio isn't the worst bit of business. He can play anywhere really and he might be able to change and adapt his game over the next few years again and becoming a battering ram in the middle or right of midfield etc. He is very versatile and was terrible at right back as he wanted to get forward too much, maybe in 18months time he will prefer playing at RB doing a job there if and when needed and having him come off the bench wouldn't be the worst move if we are chasing a game

All we see are the headlines, as per the topic title, but it's never that black and white. Who knows what has gone on behind the scenes ref this deal. Maybe he isn't on 100 bags a week, as Ern suggests he's not, and maybe there is a reason, a previous agreement, as to why he has been handed this new deal now and not next year. Yes, he's most likely to be knackered when he gets to 34 but it's worth remembering that he can play in different positions, and if he leaves earlier we can get a fee for him.
Bottom line is it's good that he's staying on as he's a good player for us and a good bloke to have around.

Does this pave the way for Bowen heading out I wonder? Antonio can play across a front 3 with maybe another striker coming in?

Against a background of crazy wages for footballers, this doesn't look extra crazy.
Injury-prone?
Despite seeming tired at certain points this season, he's looked less fragile and on the edge of an injury.
Perhaps I've imagined it, but maybe the club have a plan for managing his fitness and it's working.

This probably means we won't sign another striker until 2025. If Antonio can do it by himself for the last year, why not another 3?
